    He remained in the Royal Air Force and served with distinction during the Malaya Emergency. Having rescued the crew of a downed Auster reconnaissance aircraft under very difficult conditions he was awarded a Mention in Despatches.    
        
    He later served at RAF Khormaksar in Aden during the crisis there then returned to England as the RAF's oldest pilot aged 47 on Search and Rescue helicopters, gaining distinction by rescuing the pilot of an English Electric Lightning jet that crashed into the North Sea. He retired in 1969.
